Last Wednesday, a new language filled the conference room at Tongtuo Instruments-Portuguese. A water equipment buyer from São Paulo, Brazil, was visiting China for the first time to find water meter parts suppliers, and Tongtuo was their first stop. From workshop visits to sample confirmation, from technical exchanges to price negotiations, the two sides finalized their first order within a day: 30,000 sets of OV15 special gears and a batch of matching check valves.
"Looking online for half a year is no substitute for a day in the workshop."
At 9:30 a.m., the three-person Brazilian customer group entered Tongtuo's factory. Carlos, the technical director leading the group, a veteran in the water industry, said upon entering, "We've been researching you on Google for half a year, and today we finally see you in person."
General Manager Wang greeted them with a handshake, smiling and saying, "Then let's go straight to the workshop; what's written online is nothing compared to seeing the machines running."
The group first went to the injection molding workshop. Carlos stopped and stared at the running water meter gear molding machine for a while. He asked the translator, "For the OV15 gear model, is the tooth root area rounded? We've tried several in Brazil, and the tooth roots are prone to fatigue fracture."
General Manager Wang took a newly formed precision gear from the assembly line and handed it to him. "Feel it yourself. We deliberately enlarged the radius of the tooth root by 0.2 millimeters for better stress distribution. In Brazil's environment with high sediment content, this detail can extend the lifespan of the OV15 gear by more than 30%."
Carlos held the gear up to his eyes, rubbing the tooth root with his fingers, and nodded.
"The copper you use is the same brand as ours."
Walking to the parts display area, Manager Tang placed several brass check valves on the table. Carlos took out an old valve he had brought with him from his bag and placed it next to the Tongtuo sample.
"Our valve core sealing surface has been mirror-polished," Manager Tang said, pointing to the comparison area. "Touch it with your hand and see the difference."
Carlos tried it, his brow relaxing. "Indeed, yours is smoother. What brand of spring material is used in the OV15's matching check valve?"
General Manager Wang directly quoted a model from a well-known international copper brand. Carlos was taken aback: "We also use this brand, but the sealing surface we produce isn't as fine as yours."
"That might be due to the coolant ratio during processing," General Manager Wang said. "We've been adjusting our formula for over two years. If you're interested, we can discuss the process parameters separately."
Carlos smiled and turned to the purchasing manager accompanying him, saying something in Portuguese. The translator whispered, "He said, 'This company has something special.'"
From sample to contract, it only took half a day.
During lunch, both parties chatted while eating boxed lunches. Director Zhu had already moved the prepared sample boxes into the conference room-OV15 water meter gears, dial wheels, and check valves, each accompanied by test reports in both Chinese and English.
"This is our first time in China, and our schedule is very tight," the purchasing manager said bluntly. "If we can finalize this today, we won't have to visit a second company."
Manager Tang opened his computer and pulled up the product plan for the Brazilian market: "We've fine-tuned the formula for the OV15 transmission gears to suit the characteristics of South American water quality; their wear resistance is 20% higher than the standard model. The price list has already been optimized for bulk orders; please take a look."
Carlos spent over ten minutes on the calculator, whispered a few words to the purchasing manager, and then looked up, saying, "Thirty thousand sets of OV15 gears, plus one thousand DN15 copper check valves. But could the surface hardness of the gears be increased by another 5%?"
General Manager Wang thought for a moment: "Yes, we can. We'll adjust the heat treatment process parameters and extend the delivery date by one week. But for the first order, we don't require full prepayment; 30% deposit, and 70% upon presentation of a copy of the bill of lading-this is our sincerity towards our new customer."
At three o'clock in the afternoon, the contract was signed. As Carlos signed the papers, he uttered a remark that made everyone laugh: "After searching for half a year, I finally don't need to search anymore. From now on, we'll stick with you for this batch of OV15 series gears."
A Farewell Gift
In the evening, the Brazilian clients prepared to leave. Director Zhu took out two exquisitely packaged boxes from the sample room, each containing a model of a Tomtop OV15 smart water meter and a kit of commonly used water meter repair parts.
"These are souvenirs for you," Director Zhu said. "The small tools and sealing rings in the parts kit will come in handy during on-site installation."
Carlos took the boxes and said earnestly, "For the next order, we'll treat you to coffee in Brazil."
General Manager Wang saw them off at the factory gate. Watching the car drive away, he turned to Manager Tang and said, "This order isn't big, but the OV15 water meter parts model has opened up the South American market. Organize today's technical exchange minutes; if the Brazilian clients ask again, we can directly adjust the solution."
As night fell, the technical parameters, written in a mix of Portuguese and Chinese, remained on the whiteboard in the conference room. The "OV15" designation was circled several times-a testament to Tongtuo Instruments' first collaboration with a Brazilian client.
