Applications Across Water Meter Types
Multiple and single-jet meters
These meters implement velocity measurements to determine water consumption. Water goes through the impeller that rotates at a set speed that the device compares to the speed of passing water. These devices are best for low-volume uses, as impellers are unable to withstand very high rates.
Turbine meters
These meters are suitable for pipes with diameters of as much as 12”. Compound meters

Mechanical Water Meters
The water flow turns an impeller (or turbine), which rotates a gear train. This gear train, also called a compound gear train, consists of several interconnected gears that step down the speed of rotation from the impeller to a slower, more manageable rate for the counter.

Counter and Recording
Each gear in the train rotates a specific number of times to advance a digit wheel on the counter. For example, when a single-digit gear completes ten rotations, it causes the next gear (the tens-digit gear) to rotate once. This multi-level counting system accumulates and displays the total water consumption.

Digital and Smart Meters
In some modern meters, the mechanical gears are replaced by electronic sensors, such as magnetic sensors, that convert the physical rotation into an electronic signal.
